That is why I decided to start offering these great one of a kind costumes. I think there is a little Dark Night in all of us so I encourage you to check out this great Batman Halloween costume and as a reminder of yester-year and things to come, let’s stroll down memory lane AND look to the future of the Batman franchise….
Nearly 70 years ago the Dark Knight started to collect a list of bad-guys that he had to throttle… BAM! POW! WHOOSH! It could fill up a page! On the other hand compiling a list of his most notable and chilling characters would be easy to show here and no doubt you may have heard of them! Here is my short-list:
Come on!!! …for every guy I know, they will point to the Catwoman as one of their favorites…I’m just saying! Who doesn’t remember the first time you saw one of those beautiful ladies in that suit …Eartha Kitt, Ms. Meriweather, Julie Newmar, Michelle Pfeiffer (my favorite!) and Halle Barry (to borrow from Batman TV series one more time…SHAZAM!). These women were docile as a cat but turned into lions when facing their enemies. Their physical prowess was every bit as good as Batman and their cunning showed to be more than a match for the Dark one on more than one occasion. Yep…let’s just start with her…and that iconic suit!
How about The Riddler Frank Gorshin played this role to the HILT! He was extremely good! I use to see him on TV years later and tell my family, “Hey there is the dude who played the Riddler!” He was really good and just creepy enough to make you sit up and take notice when he came on the screen. I loved the way he talked and his laugh was extremely unique! His riddles were usually very odd and even odder (is that a word?) is the way Adam West who played Batman on the TV series would repeat the riddle and look around the room like the answer was somewhere hidden there….very strange! Jim Carrey knocked it out of the park playing The Riddler in one of the past Batman movies. He was just nuts…the perfect Riddler…end of story! The only person I think that could have been better (incrementally so) was Robin Williams…rumored to have been offered the part but had to turn it down. But GOOD NEWS!!!….Robin Williams has been rumored to have been approached to play The Riddler in the next Batman movie! Can’t wait to see what he does.
Next, who could forget The Penguin? That was one odd dude (Burgess Meredith) who played that role on the TV series. But he again, kept your attention with that little weird penguin voice and waddle. He certainly was convincing enough but I have to say, he was just too weird for me to get into and especially when Danny DeVito played him in the movie. I LOVE DANNY DEVITO…just let me say that from the jump BUT he was without a doubt one of the creepiest super-villains I have ever seen.
Mr. Freeze was rather good as a nemesis and when he showed up on TV, I think what sold it for me and my family at the time of the TV series was his seemingly foreign accent…it sounded Russian to us and we were locked in a cold war at the time with the USSR so it was not too big of a leap to believe that this Freeze guy was our enemy…of course his attacking Batman with a freeze gun didn’t hurt our negative feelings towards him either!
Arnold Schwarzenegger, while real stiff in delivering lines, didn’t do too bad in delivering Mr. Freeze in a new light for the movie Batman and Robin.
Now, who I believe to be the biggest anti-hero of all…The Joker! UN-FREAKIN-BELIEVABLE is how I will describe Heath Ledger’s role playing this character. Even Jack Nicholson, who I liked how he played The Joker and consider one of the top 5 actors of all time, didn’t deliver like Heath did. This new Joker was as dark as you could make him! It helped solidify for many fans why The Joker was Batman’s equal in cunning and I think this Heath Ledger job sold it for me.
Now that is the short list…maybe you disagree and I really welcome all comments. Let’s get a debate going here as there are sure to be new movies on Batman “Forever”!
Now, some current news….An obscure Alaska comic aficionado will be cashing in one particular rare book in his sizable unique collection, a hard-to-find copy of Batman # one first circulated seventy years ago.
Mike Wheat of Fairbanks decide to put this particular 1940 comic book on the market via Heritage Auction Galleries, in which it is anticipated to get around $40,thousand. Internet prices for bids currently have hit $30K, for the book, considered one among less than three hundred known to be available.
Live auction along with internet bids will take place Thurs. The 2nd as well as 4th Batman issues will be included . The estimated asking price will be around $5 Grand.
Wheat, who has retired from the city as a waste water facility operator, stated he views the Batman comics as a good investment. He stated, “It’s the perfect time to sell! Why not give someone else a chance to own them!”.
The Batman # 1 comic book had been found soon after community entrepreneur Ron Jaeger obtained a vintage bureau in a garage sale in the early 70′s. He had kept it in storage for a few years and upon taking it out one day noticed that he was having trouble sliding the drawer back and forth. He found that 3 comic books and some other magazines were causing the problem. It turned out that the comic books contained a rare find in the Batman #1 and Superman #17 and an older issued Red Ryder comic.
Jaeger, who knew of Wheat’s reputation as a comic book collector, was a perfect fit for his eventual purchase of the finds from Jaeger for $300.
This auction house has seen many such finds of the comic books but this particular rare offer is unique due to the low temperatures and low humidity that Fairbanks has. The paper is in exceptional condition, said Barry Sandoval, curator of operations and auctions at Heritage. Classic comics were produced on inexpensive newsprint which yellowed and degraded over time, however Wheat’s copy continue to be the original white color.
“If you would ever get a copy of the same comic from say in a southern state and opened it decades later, it would have already begun to disintegrate,” Sandoval said.
The grading scale for comics is from 1 – 10. This copy is 5.5. That is a middle-of-the-road score for a brand new comic, however extraordinary pertaining to a classic copy.
“All the 70 year old comics that I have seen are in bad shape and not even close to this quality,” Sandoval said.
Batman # 1 was initially the 1st single spin-off with regard to the Batman hero. He originally appeared in 1939 as a character in DC #27. This also introduced 2 of Batman’s greatest foes to-date…The Joker and Cat Woman.
